[A-WEB Secretariat] 2022 Election Management Capacity Building Program: Increasing the Participation of Marginalized Groups in Electoral Processes
Last updated 2022-07-27

Democracy is more likely to develop and endure when all members of a society are free to participate in political processes and influence political outcomes without discrimination. However, in many countries, large portions of the population are restricted or excluded from political participation because of their gender, age, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation. Therefore, it is crucial to decrease barriers and increase access to electoral processes for those marginalized groups.

In this regard, the A-WEB Secretariat provided a course titled Increasing the Participation of Marginalized Groups in Electoral Processes in a virtual setting from June 22 to July 1, 2022, with the participation of 25 election officials from four countries – the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Paraguay and Peru.

The course, the fourth module of the 2022 Election Management Capacity Building Program, brought together election officials and experts in the area of social inclusion to explore ways to empower all members of society so that they can become more active participants in electoral processes.

Mr. Mario Eligio Nunez Valdez from the Central Electoral Board (JNE) of the Dominican Republic appreciated the course saying, “JNE wants to express special thanks for this opportunity. As individuals and as a group, we had a chance to ponder seriously because our country is discussing inclusion and the opening of participation”.
