MEC Crowned as Most ATI Compliant Organization by The Malawi Electoral Commission -contributed by The Malawi Electoral Commission-
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has been crowned as the Most Compliant organization in implementing the Access to Information law by the Public Relations Society of Malawi (PRSM). The inaugural award was given on October 28, 2022, during the PRSM annual lakeshore conference held at Club Makokola in Mangochi. The identification process was done in consultation with the Malawi Human Rights Commission, the legal enforcer of the Act.
During the award presentation, Mr. Kapoloma, Chairman of the 2022 PRSM Annual Awards Committee, highlighted that MEC managed to meet most of the requirements set by the Committee and the regulations as gazetted by the Minister of Information and Digitalization. Mr. Kapoloma mentioned that the judges were looking for an organization whose work in giving out information was visible and that the information was easily accessible to the public.
Commenting about the award, MEC Chief Election Officer Andrew Mpesi said the award is a high recognition of the commitment by the Commission to be proactive in sharing information with stakeholders. In addition, MEC has received the Golden Key Award from the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) four times in the past years for being the most open public service institution.
