MEC presents voters register to political parties The commission and representatives of
political parties
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC)
has officially presented the preliminary voter register to all 23 registered
political parties in Malawi on 12 May 2025 Speaking during the handover ceremony
held in Lilongwe, MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja emphasized the
Commission’s commitment to transparency ahead of the upcoming elections. She announced that, in addition to
sharing the register with political parties, the Commission will also post the
voters' registers at each registration centre where the voter registration
exercise took place. This process will be conducted in phases. Justice Mtalimanja stated that providing
access to the voter register allows political parties to audit and verify,
through their designated representatives, that the list of voters is accurate
and complete. “Political parties will be able to
confirm that all individuals who registered at a particular centre are properly
captured in the printed registers,” she said. She further disclosed that the Commission will make available prescribed forms at every registration centre to enable individual voters and political parties to lodge complaints regarding any discrepancies found in the entries. The presentation of the voter register is in line with Sections 20 and 21 of the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections Act of 2023. The law mandates that electoral stakeholders-including voters, political parties, and observers-must be given an opportunity to inspect and verify the entries in the register.
