2022 Online International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) for the 20th Presidential Election of the Republic of Korea - contributed by the National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea (2022 Mar.)
On 9 March 2022, the National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea hosted the 2022 Online International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) for the 20th Presidential Election in order to introduce the electoral system of the Republic of Korea as well as broadcast the real-time voting and counting procedures of the election.
While the 2022 IEOP was held online to prevent the spread of COVID-19,
the online event was successfully held with 161 participants including experts
and election officials from election management bodies and international
organizations such as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe/Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR), the
League of Arab States and the International Institute for Democracy and
Electoral Assistance. Election officials participated in the online conference,
on behalf of 22 election management bodies worldwide including Angola,
Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bhutan, Brazil, Cambodia, Georgia, India,
Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines,
Romania, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
The online streaming videos were aired during the event, presenting
not only the electoral system of the Republic of Korea but also the difficult past
of democracy. The audiovisual accounts shared Korean experience and knowledge
on strengthening democracy with electoral officials from election management
bodies around the world.
Many election officials and experts who participated in the event
expressed keen interest in the voting and counting procedures and the
computerized electoral management system including but not limited to an optical
ballot counting and sorting machine as well as control measures implemented to
prevent the spread of COVID-19 during the election period.
