The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has appointed Mr Andrew Kamkwalala as Acting Chief Elections Officer, with immediate effect, following the resignation of Mr Andrew Mpesi.
In a Public Notice issued on 25 September 2026, MEC Chairperson Justice
Annabel Mtalimanja said the appointment follows Mr Mpesi’s resignation after
serving as the Commission’s Chief Elections Officer from 22 August 2022 to 21
August 2026.
“The Commission wishes to announce the appointment of Mr. Andrew
Kamkwalala as Acting Chief Elections Officer, with immediate effect. The
appointment follows the resignation of Mr. Andrew Mpesi, who served as the
Commission’s Chief Elections Officer, from 22 August 2022 to 21 August 2026,”
Justice Mtalimanja said.
Mr Kamkwalala is currently the Commission’s Deputy Chief Elections
Officer (Finance and Administration), a position he has held since joining the
Commission on 1 November 2022.
The Chairperson said Mr Kamkwalala would lead the Secretariat while the
Commission works on arrangements to fill the position substantively.
“The Commission calls upon all stakeholders to accord him the necessary cooperation and support as he leads the Secretariat during this period whilst the Commission works on modalities of filling the position substantively,” Justice Mtalimanja said.
