Election Visitors Program in the Republic of Korea

The Association of World Election Bodies(A-WEB) and the National Election Commission(NEC) of the Republic of Korea co-hosted the Election Visitors Program for the 2016 National Assembly Elections in Korea from April 9 to 14. A total of 65 electoral experts participated in the program, including 7 international organizations and 25 EMBs from abroad. The program started on the 9th of April and acted as an opportunity for election experts to share their knowledge and best practices to improve the election management system to enhance fairness and transparency in their countries' elections.

The schedule of Election Visitor Program was largely categorized as Experiencing mock early voting Participation in the 2016 Seoul International Forum on Election Observation of early voting, polling stations, and counting centers on election day Visiting election organizations & Field trip for cultural experience.

Mock Early Voting was held to introduce the early voting progress in Korea and to improve the understanding of the participants when visiting polling stations and counting centers on Election Day, April 13.

All participants participated in the ‘2016 Seoul International Forum on Elections’ with the themes: The influence of ICT on elections The role of citizens in the development of democracy Ways to promote women’s political participation.

Participants were divided into 7 groups and visited different polling stations located in Incheon and Seoul and observed the entire voting process from the beginning to the end of the election.

Participants visited the ‘National Election Commission’, the ‘Korean Civic Education Institute for Democracy’, the ‘National Assembly’ and ‘the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History’ to experience organizations that are related to elections in Korea and had a brief session to learn about Korean elections.

After observing the elections in Korea, participants had a debriefing session to discuss what they observed during the Korean elections.

Participants were also able to experience Korean culture by visiting Gyeongbok Palace, Insa-dong, Myeong-dong etc.

 

With these various activities during the Election Visitor Program for the 20th National Assembly Elections in Korea, we expect that the participants will be able to strengthen their relations and also contribute to enhancing fair and transparent elections worldwide.
