Presidential Election in Sri Lanka The Sri Lankan Parliament elected the country's President on July 20, 2022. This election was held to fill the vacancy after the resignation of the former President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Ranil Wickremesinghe won the election with 134 votes. Another strong candidate, Dulles Alahapperuma, was defeated with 82 votes. The term of office is five years, but Ranil Wickremesinghe will serve the rest of the former presidential tenure until November 2024. Election for the House of Councilors in Japan House of Councillors elections took place in Japan on July 10, 2022, to elect 125 of the 248 members of the upper house of the National Diet for six years. As a result, Japan’s ruling coalition increased its majority in the upper house of parliament in an election. The Liberal Democratic Party won 63 seats and Komieto won 13 seats. On the other hand, Japan’s main opposition party, the Constitutional Democratic Party, secured 17 seats. The voter turnout was 52.05%.
