The Malawi Electoral Commission had engaged village night criers to help spread information and mobilize people to register and verify their details for the August 23 Local Government By-elections. The group village headmen nominate the village night criers. MEC spokesperson Mr. Mwafulirwa said, “Because they are familiar with the areas, it will
be easy for them to penetrate even the difficult and most ignored places with
messages about the By-elections.”
He added that the Commission came up with criteria for the village night criers to prevent some of them from spreading partisan information or campaigning for a particular candidate. The Commission also placed messages on radio stations and sent letters to all churches, mosques and religious places to be read by their faithful. |
