The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) head office is moving to Lilongwe City after a 17 year stay at Chisankho House in Blantyre. To ensure business continuity, staff and all assets will be transferred in a phased approach.

MEC Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi said the move is in line with the proposed reforms under the Public Sector Reform Program. Lilongwe is at the center of the country, which will give an advantage to the electoral body when implementing activities because most of the ministries, departments and agencies that MEC deals with are based there.

As MEC has moved its head office to Lilongwe, stakeholders in the Southern region will be served by the Regional Elections Office. Before the establishment of the MEC Secretariat in 1998, elections were managed by the Secretariat of the Malawi Parliament, which was then based in Zomba. Over the years, the Commission has expanded and it now has 246 members of staff and offices in all the councils of the country, of which 148 are based at the head office. The Commission has a medium-term plan to have its own purpose-built premises, which will include all facilities like offices, conference rooms, and warehouses in Lilongwe.
