Publication of the A-WEB May Newsletter in 2023

The A-WEB Secretariat recently released the May issue of the A-WEB Newsletter. We thank you again for the valuable contributions from experts in the Secretariat, our partner and member organizations: IFES, member EMBs in Colombia, Ethiopia, South Korea, Malawi, Mongolia and Portugal. 

 

We especially want to thank two young and prospective experts, Ms. ALTANCHIMEG Purevsuren and Ms. Yu-Wei Wang. ALTANCHIMEG Purevsuren, Senior Officer of  ITC of the General Election Commission of Mongolia, provided us with an article on her Experience Observing the 2023 Paraguayan General Elections as an Observer of the A-WEB Mission. Yu-Wei Wang, seconded to the A-WEB Secretariat by recommendation of the Central Election Commission of Taiwan, recently completed her internship in the Secretariat and contributed the article about her impression and thoughts on her Experience.

Upcoming events 

A survey of the A-WEB Secretariat :We will use the findings and implications of the survey as a contribution to the upcoming Conference on the 10th Anniversary of A-WEB, scheduled to be held on October 12 this year. 

 

19th International Symposium on Electoral Affairs in Portugal by the CNE Portugal and ICPS (26-29 June, 2023): The Portuguese National Electoral Commission (CNE) will organize the Symposium in partnership with the International Centre for Parliamentary Studies (ICPS) from 26-29 June in Almada, Portugal.

Project of IFES in cooperation with UNDP on Promoting Environmentally Conscious Elections

 

A Study on Violence against Women in Elections (VAWE) by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE): VAWE indicates violence against women that impinges on women's political rights. 

 

Celebration of the 12th Voters’ Day on May 10 by the National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea

 

Electoral Observations 

Malawi hosted a delegation from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Advisory Council (SEAC) as a follow-up observer mission of the 2019 and 2020 SADC electoral observer missions from 24 to April 29, 2023. 

 

Observation of the 2023 Paraguayan General Elections Through these elections, Paraguayan voters elected the President and Vice-President, 45 members of the Chamber of Senators (Upper Chamber), 80 members of the Chamber of Deputies (lower Chamber), 17 Governors (departments), and 257 Departmental Councilors. The article describes the electoral systems in Paraguay, including the electoral roll, voting from abroad, home voting, using electronic voting machines and transmission of results and others.

Participation of the A-WEB Secretariat in the election observation program organized by the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) for the General Elections held on May 14, 2023, where 500 members of the House of Representatives were elected. The article includes information on places the international observers visited: Distribution of Election Materials and Equipment, polling stations and media center located in the office of ECT. It also described the electoral system, including advance voting, voter identification Ballot Distribution to the voters.

Preparation for the upcoming elections in Colombia

Colombia will hold local elections on October 29, 2023. The Ministry of the Interior installed the National Commission of Electoral Guarantees (CNGE), which comprises the National Electoral Council (CNE), the National Civil Registry (RNEC), the Ombudsman's Office, the Attorney General's Office, the Prosecutor General's Office, and members of military forces.
