The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), the A-WEB Chair organization, recently published a Special Issue of the South Africa Journal of International Affairs: SAFEGUARDING EMBS IN THE AGE OF DEMOCRATIC RECESSION as a part of the A-WEB initiatives of "Legacy Projects." The introductory article "Safeguarding EMBs in the age of democratic recession" defines the characteristics of a democratic recession, analyzes global trends in democratic quality and electoral management, and considers the implications for EMBs. It also discusses how international and regional organizations address these challenges and introduces other articles in the special issue.
In this context, the Association of World Election Bodies, A-WEB, has also been noted as one of the key players of international networks dedicated to influencing and supporting electoral integrity worldwide. A-WEB has focused on enhancing EMB capacity through various programs, including capacity building training programs, information technology initiatives, and election visitor programs. A-WEB regularly conducts dialogue forums and publicizes reports addressing topical election management issues, fostering knowledge-sharing among members.
Chaired by the Electoral Commission of South Africa, A-WEB's 5th General Assembly in October 2022 centered on the theme 'Safeguarding Election Management Bodies in the Age of Global Democratic Recession.' This special issue is a result of the General Assembly, the highest decision-making body of A-WEB.
