Last updated 2023-06-09

From 24 to 29 April, Malawi hosted a delegation from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Advisory Council (SEAC) as a follow up observer mission of the 2019 and 2020 SADC electoral observer missions. The delegation engaged the Malawi Electoral Commission on Tuesday, 25 April 2023.

The Commission delegation was led by Chairman, Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale, accompanied by Commissioner Francis Kasaila, Commissioner Olivia Mchaju Liwewe, the Chief Elections Officer, Mr. Andrew Mpesi and other members of management.

In his remarks, the MEC Chair Justice Dr. Kachale, appreciated the SEAC delegation's visit as an important sign of the collaboration to ensure that electoral democracy is strengthened in the region.

Speaking after the meeting, the MEC Chairman said the meeting's agenda was to update the SADC SEAC delegation on the progress the Commission has made since releasing the two reports.

The mission also held meetings with other electoral stakeholders, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malawi Police Service, political parties, civil society organizations, the Judiciary and the Registrar of Political parties.

Leader of the delegation, Advocate Notemba Tjipueja, applauded the Commission for making progress in addressing the areas highlighted in its reports for the 2019 and 2020 elections.

However, Advocate Tjipueja, former chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia, called on the Commission, among other things, to find means of addressing the prevalence of fake news and disinformation during the elections period as well as its impact on candidates.
