2021 Elections in Mexico: the Largest Scale Election in Mexico's History -contributed by the National Electoral Institute (INE) of Mexico-
On 6 June 2021, more than 93.3 million voters went to the polls to vote for 20,417 posts at federal, state, and municipal levels, in all 32 states of Mexico. This was the largest scale election in Mexico's history. As part of management procedures for the election, the National Electoral Institute (INE) of Mexico trained more than 1.3 million citizens to work as polling officers, as well as prepare and install 163,666 polling sites.
The election was held in compliance with a ruling of the Electoral Court that determiend that persons held in prisons, who have not been sentenced, should be guarateed the right to vote. For purposes of the next federal elections, INE implemented a pilot program to be carried out in five federal prisions. Furthermore, Mexican citizens residing overseas who register as out-of-country , could elect to cast their vote online, instead of the conventional postal voting that has been used sicne 2006. INE implemented several protocols regarding sanitary measures for various activities associated with the elections, including political rallies,electoral day and common activities of the EMB.It is significant that the elections did not lead to any increase in COVID-19 cases.
Additionally, during 2021,INE managed a national referendum, a local extraordinary election for a Federal Senate seat and 11 extraordinary elections at a municipal level.
