Global Forum on Democracy,"The Role of Electoral Bodies in Democratic Governance" -contributed by the National Electoral Institute of Mexico-
The Natinoal Electoral Institute of Mexico, in collaboration with the Venice Commission, Kofi Annan Foundation, Internatinoal Foundation for Electoral Systems, Inter-American Institute of Human Rights, Internatinoal Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance and the Organization of American States, hosted a Global Forum, themed, "The Role of Electoral Bodies in Democratic Governance," which took place on 24-25 November in a virtual format.
The forum was part of an effort started in 2010 to discuss Latin American democracy and promote reflection and analysis. The forum addressed problems that have had an impact on contemporary electoral democracy such as the pandemic, changes in global geopolitics, enviornmental crisis, and several participants suggested a kind of rearragement towards a new and functional international system.
A total of 36 speakers from 20 countries worldwide participated in the forum. The effectiveness of democracy was the central topic of the discussions, which covered: 1)Questions of legitimacy of origin, where electoral bodies play a fundamental role in democratic governance; 2)The management capacity of democratic regimes. Therefore, this event aimed to analyze and discuss some of the main problems and challenges facing democracy in the first decades of the 21st century. All the speakers were unanimous regarding the view that democracy needs to be reinforced, rebuilt, and strengthened, and that the world needs the talents, ideas, and experiences of politicians, academics, public officials, and electoral experts, among others.
