Elections in 2021

-contributed by the Election Commission of India-

The Election Commission of India conducted assembly elections in 5 States/Union Territory, viz. Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, in March-April 2021. A total of 822 Assembly Constituencies went to the polls. The combined electorate that participated in the election was 146 million and 266,020 polling booths were established across these 5 states /UT. These elections were held during the peak of the pandemic in the country. As the situation unfolded, the Commission tightened the COVID protocols, imposing further restrictions. COVID guidelines issued by ECI were conveyed to all political entities and the public in general and special arrangements were made to ensure COVID safety during the counting of votes. ECI responded dynamically to the changing situation and stayed ahead of the curve.

The assembly polls saw enthusiastic voting and high voter turnout:82.24% in West Bengal, 82.33% in Assam, 83.42% in Puducherry, 74.57% in Kerala and 73.60% in Tamil Nadu, demonstrating that the voters reposed faith in the ECI yet again.

In addition to the above, the ECI held a number of by-elections/adjourned polls during the year 2021.
