Local Council and Women's Development Committee Elections 2020
-contributed by the Elections Commission of Maldives- The Elections Commission of Maldives(ECM) conducted the "Local Council and Women's Development Committee Elections 2020" on 10 April 2021, which had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A total of 982 people were elected for the Council seats, and 930 people were elected for Women's Development Committees, totaling 1,912 elected representatives.
For the first time, Women's Development Committee members, who are responsible for upholding women's rights, expanding their political participation, and serving in an advisory capacity to the Island and Atoll Councils, were elected through the Local Council elections.
The election took place amid the Covid-19 pandemic with the safety guidelines stipulated by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) of the Maldives. The guidelines outline regulations that the ECM, voters, and other stakeholders must follow to ensure the safety of the public and all personnel involved in election-related tasks.
Key provisions mentioned in the guidelines were based on campaign adjustments, recruitment of poll workers, and training along with COVID-19-related voter education. The guidelines advised poll workers, observers, and other attendants to take protective measures such as face masks and face shields. Polling stations were laid out to ensure physical distancing of voters,poll workers, and other attendants. Handswashing and sanitizing facilities and proper waste disposal arrangements were provided at all voting stations. Additionally, disinfection of polling station spaces was carried out at regular intervals before, during, and after the elections.
