In Hungary, the National Election Office (NEC) and the National Election Committee (NEC) celebrated their 10th anniversary in Budapest with the participation of several public dignitaries.
Dr. Judit Varga,
Minister of Justice, also delivered a speech at the ceremony held in the
Hungarian Parliament on 25 May, stressing that in 2024 there will be both European
Parliament (EP) and local elections, and she is confident that the National
Election Office (NEC) and the National Election Committee (NEC) will stand
their ground in this situation as well, ensuring the democratic and free choice
of the Hungarian people, free from external influence, through the professional
conduct of elections.
The participants
were first welcomed by István Jakab, Vice President of the National Assembly.
According to the speaker, in the past ten years, the electoral administration
has successfully conducted nine national and more than 1,200 local government
and national minority elections, two national and several local referendums and
the quality of the work has been outstanding at the international level.
In his speech, Dr.
Attila Nagy, President of the National Election Office, expressed his gratitude
to the partners cooperating in the elections and to the election administration
for their work so far. He emphasized that the creation of the Office goes
beyond a simple organizational decision. He said the decision "confirms
the importance of the tasks that the organization has to perform and reflects
the expectations placed on it to be an independent and impartial body to ensure
the legitimate and smooth conduct of the vote."
Dr. Róbert Sasvári,
President of the National Election Commission, also celebrating the 10th
anniversary of its establishment this year, pointed out in his speech that
"the most important objective of the body is to conduct free and
democratic elections and to serve the widest possible exercise of the civil
rights of voters."
The ceremony was also addressed by Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of the Constitutional Court, prof. Dr. Zsolt András Varga, President of the Curia; Dr. László Windisch, President of the State Audit Office of Hungary, prof.
