30 years of the electoral system of the Russian Federation

In September 2023, the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation celebrated its 30th anniversary. The institution of people's power in Russia has deep roots and more than a thousand years of history.

Russian statehood, which originated in the IX century, was made possible thanks to the people's assemblies Veche. They were the place where the most important issues were resolved and fateful decisions were made.

Gradually, Veches were replaced by Zemstvo councils, the structure of developed local self- government. More and more social classes acquired voting rights, and women in Russia received the right to vote among the first in the world.

Today, referendums and free elections are the highest expression of people's power, and the system of election commissions is designed to ensure that nearly 110 million voters have the right to elect and be elected.

The CEC of Russia celebrated this memorable date by organizing an exhibition at the State Historical Museum in Moscow entitled "The Right to Vote. A Brief History of Russian People's Power" on September 21. On September 22, a street photo exhibition, "30 Years of Russia's Electoral System: Traditions and Innovations," was opened in the center of Moscow.

In addition, an educational marathon, "Elections in Russia: History and Modernity," was held. It included lectures, interviews, and discussions on the history of elections, modern standards of the electoral process in the country, and youth participation in elections. A series of films on the history of electoral law was prepared.
